"NUS Toastmasters Club has been a very welcoming and enlightening safe space for me to practise my public speaking skills. It has been quintessential to my development as a better speaker and a more confident person in all domains of my life. Kudos to the EXCO team and members for making this possible!"
“NUS Toastmasters Club has provided me with opportunities to further pursue my passion for public speaking. Over the past three years, I have participated in International Speech Contests and Table Topics Contests. These experiences have shown me the warmth and supportive nature of our club, which makes me grateful to be part of this community.”
"Being part of the NUS Toastmasters Club has significantly shaped both my personal and professional growth. Personally, it pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me build confidence in expressing my thoughts clearly and authentically. Professionally, it strengthened my communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills, especially through leading a team, organizing meetings, and giving constructive feedback. Overall, the experience has made me a more self-aware, articulate, and impactful individual, better prepared to navigate both workplace challenges and leadership opportunities."
"Here, you’ll find a very encouraging and supportive environment to hone your public speaking skills—while most importantly developing self-confidence and growing as a communicator. Members’ speeches are often captivating and entertaining, sometimes thought-provoking, but always leave you reflecting on an important lesson learned. It’s a place where you are not only inspired, but also encouraged to inspire others in return."
"My mom had been encouraging me to join NUS Toastmasters Club ever since she found out that my university had one. However, I only decided to join when I realised the importance of communication skills while applying for jobs. I didn’t join earlier because I thought it would be like attending lessons in school — but boy, was I wrong… it was a lot more fun than that!
After joining, I started to look forward to the weekly chapter meetings and suppers. It was a safe space to explore my communication style, with the support of friendly peers, as well as the club advisor and mentor.
Two important skills I learnt from NUSTMC are giving effective feedback and emceeing. When I first started as a speech evaluator, I found the role daunting — the speakers were often better than me, and I was sometimes lost for words. But over time, I learnt how to analyse speeches more effectively and provide more holistic feedback — not just to improve the speaker’s speech, but also to motivate and encourage them.
After joining NUSTMC, I secured my first job and was also accepted into a PhD programme at NUS. Beyond improving my interview skills, I also had the opportunity to take on leadership positions — not just within the club, but at the Toastmasters Singapore level as well. There, I got to connect with people from various backgrounds and, together, we contributed to helping the community in Singapore become better communicators and leaders.
All these would not have been possible without the strong foundation built by NUSTMC."
